There were many aspects of this wedding that were memorable, but two specific things stand out the most. First, the wonderful effort by both the bride and groom's families to embrace and honor one another surpassed everything I have ever witnessed. Seeing both families treat each other with such regard and love was truly moving. Secondly, Tory and Jitesh spent nearly every moment of two days I was around them laughing. They emanated a joy that seemed very deeply rooted in friendship, and their happiness was reflected in every aspect of their wedding.

I traveled up to Peterborough, New Hampshire to spend some time with Jen and Gardiner, who will be married this Saturday. Her family has lived for numerous generations in Peterborough, and I loved the pride and affection she has for the little town. I first met Gardiner and Jen at an MFA party that I documented several years ago. At the time, they were not even engaged, but I was very flattered that they remembered me and contacted me many months later to ask me to be a part of their celebration.

Kim and Matt invited me up to experience Marblehead with them, and I was completely infatuated with the little town. If you have never been, you really should go.. Kim and Matt first stumbled upon the place by chance. They relayed an amusing story in which they were out for a drive and decided to go somewhere new. They looked at their GPS and settled upon Marblehead because they liked one of the street names. Consequently, it became a favorite escape for them, and Matt even proposed to Kim there.

Hanging out with them was delightful. I loved discovering that Kim grew up riding horses (I grew up riding too) and getting a glimpse of Matt's dorky sense of humor (I too am an absolute dork at heart). Shooting their wedding next June is going to be such fun!!

Julie and John will be moving to Europe soon after their wedding this September, so they wanted to make images in some of their favorite places around Boston before they begin a new adventure together. We started at their home in South Boston (which was full of such a whimsical spaces!! Think bamboo filled courtyards, ivy covered metal walls, and grassy hilltops with trees growing on the roof deck. ) and eventually made our way to The Buttery in the South End, which is "their spot" :)

Maegan and Kevin invited me to their home in Seymour, Connecticut for their engagement session. The town is especially sentimental to them because they have known each other since they were children and both grew up there. During our evening together, I observed a quietness that seemed to define their love, and an uncommon closeness that Kevin shared with Meagan's family which was extremely touching.

We photographed many of the images in a field that Maegan has admired since she was a little girl. She loved the place so much that she had taken time the day before my arrival to knock on doors, find the owner of the land, and request permission to shoot there! Needless to say, I was utterly charmed by her attachment to the place and the beauty of it as well!

Even the buck head was adorned with a boutonniere for the wedding day. Need I say more? Generally my blog posts are about the bride and groom. However, on this specific occasion, despite the couple's obviously deep love for one another and their many happy tears during the reception, I feel compelled to write a bit about Jane. Jane is the bride's mother. Although Carrie and Michael reside in California, they decided to return to Carrie's childhood home in Massachusetts to be married. Carrie remarked to me on the wedding day that all the decor of the event was going to be a surprise. She had entrusted every detail to Jane, and Jane did not take her responsibility lightly.

This was one of the most beautiful events I have seen in several years. Every tiny detail was attended to-- even the mounted buck head, and it all glowed with the love that Jane has for her daughter.

Needless to say, I was smitten with this wedding :)

{Laura & Charlie 7.2.11} The Country Club Brookline Wedding Photography

This celebration was visually captivating in many ways, but what I really loved was how Laura and Charlie seemed to be constantly erupting in laughter during their wedding day. It must have been contagious, because every person in attendance exuded an uncanny sense of friendliness and joy.

The entire event took place at the ever-lovely Country Club in Brookline, and everyone danced the night away to the very charismatic tunes of Nightshift.

Some weddings just seem to have a sort of poetry to them. I do not know if it was the magical quality of the place (Martha's Vineyard is truly charming), or the light that caressed everything so elegantly on their day, or the quietness of the love between Shuchi and JB, but something evoked unusual beauty in all of the images that resulted from this celebration.

Traveling to Martha's Vineyard is an epic journey in and of itself (it took me 5 hours from door to door), and I think the time I had to reflect during my traveling set the stage for the day that was to come.

A huge thank you to Judy Murray of MV Event Planning. She was truly invested in making the wedding as beautiful and as seamless as possible.

Emily & John live in the wilds of Manhattan but returned to Massachusetts for their wedding celebration at Middlesex School in Concord. Both of Emily's parents are teachers at the beautiful school, and Emily spent her childhood roving its charming spaces.

Things I adored about the day-- the abundance of candy striped umbrellas, the lush green grass, The groom's delightful attire (John, you have amazing fashion sense!), the band that came all the way from NYC for the celebration, Emily's stunning smile (she can light up a room with it), and both immediate families of the couple-- they just exuded such genuine kindness and love!

A huge thank you to the wildly talented Ben Schaefer, who documented the day with me, and a shout out also to the adorable Heather Minicucci, who was a perfect planner, as always..

Observing a couple that is in love is truly moving. Whether they happen to be quite shy or very flirtatious, even the smallest gestures and interactions never cease to infatuate me. It is one of the many reasons I adore my job.

Alyss and Chris spent a perfectly lit evening walking the streets of Boston with me. We went to the spot in the Boston Gardens where Chris proposed to Alyss during a picnic, strolled along the Charles River, and walked through Beacon Hill.

Last year, I photographed Nate and Sarah's charming wedding at the Veronique. They later introduced me to Erik and Jess. As soon as Erik told me the story of how he proposed to Jess, I knew I wanted to be a part of their day (He took Jess to her home town in PA under false pretenses so that he could surprise her with a proposal in the presence of her grandmother, with whom she is extremely close).

The wedding was simply adorable. We had an hour to roam the Crane Estate for portraits before an intimate ceremony at Steep Hill Beach and then headed over to Erik's parent's home for a fun filled reception complete with a moonwalk bounce house (yes, i got in it!!! duh. ) to entertain the many cute kids that attended the event.

Everything about their day was quirky, fun, and full of love. Thus, when Jillian, Jana's sister, contacted me about her celebration, I was thrilled! Much like my sister and myself, Jana and Jillian have very different senses of style, and I liked being able to observe their unique visions of self, romance, and of course party throwing :)

Patrick, Peter, Jerry, and Sean of the Grafton Group, are the coolest restauranteurs around. They are down to earth guys who care about their employees and have amazing business acumen. Last year, they opened their newest venture, the Russell House Tavern, and gave me the task of photographing its spaces, food, and staff (to view images from Russell House, just click here). It was Such Fun!!

I have always loved the restaurant industry. The energy and creativity that is present in a fine dining restaurant is simply breathtaking. Naturally, when Patrick asked if I would photograph the other restaurants that Grafton Group owns, I was very excited. The following images were made at Temple Bar in Cambridge, MA. If you have never dined there, go in and sit at the bar. Have their fondue appetizer (insanely delicious) and a housemade negroni. Yum.

I am a big fan of Matthew and Tara. I had a blast hanging out with them during their engagement shoot in Chicago, and their wedding day was no different. Both exude an unmistakable kindness and possess an unassuming demeanor, which is of course, utterly charming.

The couple was married at St. Peter's Church in Weston and celebrated a beautiful reception at the Westin Copley Place.

In other very fun news, Ben Schaefer documented this wedding armed only with several iphone 4s. The original intention was to tweet the wedding in real time, which proved quite complicated. Lousy reception can make uploading photos to twitter nearly impossible... We shall have to brainstorm further on creative avenues to immediately share a wedding day with friends who cannot attend the event. However, the work he created was really quite astounding! The Drawing Room project - preface.

Last spring, I attended Rebirth Workshops and was very honored to be awarded a grant from the group. You can see a copy of the book I made for the grant application below.

Each year, I do my best to produce a focused body of artwork, and I wanted to use my grant for that purpose. Through the course of many conversations with other friends and artists, the concept of an art making trip that excluded the use of digital media was born. The fact is, I am still not exactly sure what the art is going to be about. I simply know that I want to remember what it is like to experience life without so much instant gratification, and with more human interaction.

My intention is to travel over 3500 miles, shoot only film, use maps instead of gps, conversation instead of text messages, written stories instead of emails, and first person experiences in liu of tweets, facebook, and blogging. Thus, I embark!

My sister will be receiving postcards and polaroids from me via mail, which she will blog here ( I know... it's kind of cheating!) so feel free to check back and keep up with The Drawing Room Project!

{Jillian and Steve} Plimoth Plantation wedding

Several years ago, I had the pleasure of photographing Molly and Adam's wedding at the Museum of Science. Both families were an absolute pleasure to work with, so I was thrilled when Kathy (Adam's mother) contacted me and asked if i would document her daughter Jill's wedding. To say that the couple is "theatrical" would be an understatement. I think that Brendan, From B-sharp entertainment (their DJ for the evening) summed it up best-- He said " it felt like I was DJing for the cast of Glee ".

The couple was married at The Church of St. Peter, and celebrated their reception at Plimoth Plantation.

Francisco and Sarah are dear friends of mine. They will be married in Knoxville in September, but wanted to have some images made before the wedding day. We embarked on a chilly and slightly muddy adventure in order to commemorate their engagement and were rewarded with some of the most stunning afternoon light I have ever seen. The engagement session took place in Knoxville, Tennessee, which is where I spent a great deal of my childhood.

Kate and Brian 10.16.10 The Union Club Boston Wedding

October 16th was exciting for several reasons. First, It was my last wedding of this season. Do not misunderstand, I Adore every celebration I am commissioned to document, but the last wedding of the year is always special...It marks the beginning of the winter months, which allow for a bit of catch up in all sorts of areas-- artistically, professionally, and personally.

Secondly, I am a big fan of Kate and Brian. During our first visit, we just clicked. I loved hearing Kate talk about her friendship with her sister (they both adore sneakers and both hold positions at athletic shoe companies), and Brian made me smile when he literally lit up as he spoke about Phil, their dog.

Last but not least, they chose to celebrate their reception at the Union Club in Boston. As soon as I set foot in the door, I was excited to shoot there. The spaces within are beautiful, unique, brightly colored, and intimate.

It was an amazing day. Kate prepared at the Taj, the ceremony was held at the Old South Church, and the couple dedicated an hour to portraits of the two of them around the city before they headed over to the Union Club for their reception.

Tara and Biren live in California, but returned to Cambridge to celebrate their wedding (they fell in love here!). Preparations took place at the brightly colored Hotel Marlowe, and the ceremony and reception were held at the Museum of Science. My favorite memories from the day were the toasts. Sarah & Nate 10.9.10 Ballroom Veronique Brookline Wedding

I have photographed many events at the Ballroom Veronique, but every time I am there, I discover tiny details I never noticed before. This time, it was the endearingly retro leopard-esque wallpaper that adorned the walls of a coatroom. It reminded me of my grandfather's house. One of the rooms therein had been lovingly dubbed the "jungle room"by all of the grandkids because of its wild animal theme. But I digress... As soon as I spotted the nook I just described, I knew it would be perfect for portraits of Nate and Sarah. It seemed to embody their quirkiness and sense of fun and complimented Sarah's beautiful little Melissa Sweet frock.

I really dug this wedding. All of the guests were terribly hip, professional camera gear abounded, Sarah and Nate's beautiful and bright sense of love and friendship for each other was SO tangible, and of course the Chicken Slacks were just as fabulous as usual..

Erin and Max were blessed with an amazing fall day for their wedding. Both the ceremony and reception were held at the Lighthouse Inn on Cape Cod, and I enjoyed watching the families relax and visit in their picturesque cottages before the events commenced. Most striking of all was the sunset, which washed across the sky as soon as Erin and Max walked down the aisle as husband and wife...

Shades of red, black, and white ruled Kelly and Paul's wedding, and they did so with a lighthearted sense of whimsy that I simply loved. Never, never have I seen such a perfect execution of a colored theme for an event. Paul's affection for Kelly was another favorite element of the day. I was moved by the way he would look at her and literally sweep her off her feet. Their wedding embodied romance, vision, and imagination.

The ceremony was held at Norwich Farm and the reception was celebrated at the Path of Life Garden in Windsor, Vermont.

Diana & David 9.24.10 Belle Mer Wedding Newport, RI

I have wanted to photograph a wedding at Belle Mer since it opened. The space is just so clean and simple-- A stunning white canvas with which you can be Ever so creative. Thus, when Diana and David decided to include me in their day, I was terribly excited.

The wedding met all of my expectations. It happened to be extremely foggy, which lent a romantic and extra monochromatic element to the images. Pink was the color that was featured throughout the event, and Stoneblossom did an excellent job of incorporating it into all of the arrangements for the affair. Last but certainly not least, Donna Kim coordinated, so naturally everything went off without a hitch.

One of the main reasons I continue to love wedding photography is the freedom I am granted during each celebration to observe family dynamics. Sometimes I feel more like a social scientist than an artist. Witnessing how families interact and love each other never loses its sense of intrigue. It is truly one of the most compelling aspects of my job. I photographed Becca's sister's wedding several years ago, so when they asked me to return to be a part of Becca's wedding day, I was especially excited, as it meant I would be granted another look into their lovely family's life.

The couple chose Hartman's Herb farm for their venue, and I loved the quaint beauty of the setting.

It went something like this:

Humby and Paul celebrated their wedding at the Wequassett Resort in Chatham. Some unexpected rain prevented an outdoor ceremony, but it did not dampen anyone's spirits. Some of my favorite elements of the evening included but were not limited to the following:
-the general adorableness of the newlyweds
-very cute Texans
-the Chicken Slacks (amazing, as usual)
-and an impromptu tea party that took place in the salon beside the reception hall during the dessert portion of the dinner service

I always really love the atmosphere and experience of wedding receptions that take place in respected boston restaurants. The setting is always very beautiful and unique, the food memorable, and the ambiance quite intimate. Thus, when Jessica and Christian approached me about shooting their celebration at Mistral (their ceremony was to be held in the Gordon Chapel at the Old South Church), I was excited :]

The couple also dedicated nearly two hours to creative portraits around the city, which is quite unusual. It was wonderful to have the extra time to make images of the two of them that moved beyond what is generally achievable during the course of a regular wedding day.

Abby & Scott 9.05.10

When I got a phone call from Abby, who is a photojournalist employed by the Library of Congress, asking me to photograph her wedding, I was extremely flattered. I always consider it High praise when a fellow photographer entrusts their celebration to me.

During the wedding, I couldn't help but twitter about all the beautiful women with big cameras. I was surrounded by both, and it was truly fabulous :]

So many elements of the wedding were stunning-- Abby's dress (SO adorable on her), the unbelievably blue sky that was accented by cotton candy clouds, their tented reception by the sea, and their band Legit, who seriously blew my mind.

The ceremony was held at the Rye Congregational Church, and the reception followed at The Seacoast Science Center.

{Jenny and Michael 9.4.10}

I adore Jen and Michael. Their understanding and appreciation of photography really made me excited to be a part of their wedding. Jenny has a smile that can light up an entire room, and both of them possess a relaxed demeanor that made my work a cinch! The kids at the wedding really stole my heart, too. There was a tiny table set up just for them, and it made me giggle to watch them eating their chicken fingers together.

The ceremony was held at St. Anthony's Church in Cohasset, and the reception took place at Atlantica.

::Sarah & Adam 8.28.10:: The Harvard Club Wedding Boston

Sarah and Adam's wedding was the epitome of tasteful refinement. Many of the gentlemen wore hand tied bowties and suspenders. Sarah donned a perfectly fitted lace gown. Everything reminded me of gentility from a time long past. It was all terribly charming.

The ceremony took place at the Church of the Covenant and the reception was held at the Harvard Club.

I must also mention Dani Wagener. :) She was the makeup expert that created Sarah's beautiful look.I am always a big fan of her work.

{Thuy and Kip! 8.21.10} Liberty Hotel Wedding Boston

As soon as Thuy and Kip came in for their initial consulation with me, I knew we would be fast friends. Both of them possess a joy for life that is simply contagious, and Thuy and I share a passion for inordinately expensive shoes :)

I was honored to observe their day unfold at the Liberty Hotel. It was touching to see Thuy's mother walk her down the aisle. I also loved the lightheartedness of their reception. They had brought all sorts of funny props for guests to wear and pose for the camera with. My favorites included a Mullet wig and a furry headband with two antenae and silly red hearts perched on top.

Thank you for entrusting your day to me, you two! I <3 you both

:Lauren & Mike 8.14.10: Taj Hotel weddding Boston

Lauren and Mike's wedding fostered a sense of classic Boston elegance. They were married at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and celebrated their reception at the Taj hotel. I really enjoyed Lauren's taste for simplicity. The white arrangements that Spruce had created for the bouquets and centerpieces looked quite beautiful in the richly colored ballroom. Also worth praise was the band, Kahootz, who brought a ton of energy and fun to the party.

Kfoo & Tao 7.31.10 Belmont Habitat Wedding

I must confess, I cried during Katherine and Tao's wedding vows. Their love for each other was just so palpable. This was Such a stunning wedding. I loved the people, the close friendships, the flowers (that were grown on a friend's farm), the dress!!! -- it looked like origami, the food (Tables of Content is a force to be reckoned with. SO GOOD), the location- Belmont Habitat... Basically, I adored every tiny detail.
